Giant robots fighting giant aliens! Lord, is this dumb – but at least it’s not trying to fool you or itself into thinking it’s any cleverer than it is.

Even going into it prepared for cringe-worthy moments, I still cringed – but its lack of pretension makes it pretty enjoyable overall. There are some cool setpieces too – in particular, the scene used in the original teaser trailer, of the giant mecha collapsing onto the shore, its pilot tumbling out shortly after, and the old man and the kid rushing to help them. It’s beautifully composed, and there’s so much detail in each of the different robots (plus: at least I could tell them apart, unlike Transformers).
