Fun motion design outcomes from an unlikely source.
School of Motion has an excellent series of After Effects video tutorials. Each 30-to-60 minute episode demonstrates, step-by-step, sophisticated tips and tricks. But perhaps most importantly – and I can’t stress this enough – each presenter talks you through both the software and the techniques in clear, comprehensive, easy-to-follow language.
One of the more interesting examples is the episode ‘Creatively Using Text Animators in After Effects‘. By looking at a tool designed (or at least labeled as being) for one specific use, but exploring it for other outcomes, the lesson shows some important ideas about creative thinking in practice:
- Thinking about tools differently – a great way to generate ideas and results that look and feel a little different from everything else out there
- Learning tools as a language – once you understand what’s unique to a particular medium or format, you can begin to really express things you couldn’t any other way
