Way more fun than my rant makes it sound.
Video game logic as premise for a movie (tangentially related: watch the doco King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters right now).
I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The groundhog day thing was done well, Emily Blunt is so kick-ass and sexy (without being sexualised), and Tom Cruise made me forget he’s an alien by (for the first time?) not automatically being a superhuman action hero, but actually being a gutless PR guy who has to get whipped into shape by said kick-ass woman. The first landing-in-the-battlefield scene is sci-fi Saving Private Ryan in its camerawork, editing and colour palette. Seriously jarring.
UPDATE: I watched it again recently – aptly enough, I enjoyed it more on repeat viewing. If i still had a TV in my life, this would be one of my “Oh this is on? I won’t change the channel” movies.
