When a tech giant chooses practical effects over CGI and AI.

Process

In the megacorp AI marketing landscape, it’s refreshing to see Apple’s behind-the-scenes reveal of a logo built with glass and captured in-camera:

The promo visuals for the MacBook Neo also feature handmade techniques:

“Generative AI is for ‘poor people’, and the arts are only for the rich.” AI ethicist Catharina Doria argues that handmade brand marketing is symptomatic of a larger capitalist project of increased class division:

🚨Pls watch this video. NO ONE is talking about THIS but you need to understand that GENERATIVE IS FOR “POOR PEOPLE”, REAL HUMAN ART IS/AND WILL increasingly be only for “RICH PEOPLE”. And this new holiday commercial made by Porsche just solidifies this. Ok, so Porsche just released a 100% made BY HUMANS with hand-drawn animation and 3D. And of course, NO USE of GENERATIVE AI. As an AI ethicist, I think this is a GREAT example of something I’ve been saying for the longest time: generative AI is for “poor people.” Human-made art is, and will be, for rich people. In this video, I explain why this is happening and how generative AI is being pushed down to the masses and normalized as “a great tool,” while people in power are making it very clear they are NOT going to use it — basically keeping human creativity, authorship, and soul for themselves. I think this is particularly interesting since just a few weeks ago, Coca-Cola also launched a holiday commercial fully made with AI. 👀 What do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Let’s discuss in the comments. 🔄 Please share this video to spread awareness. People need to understand how GenAI is just one of the ways people in power have found to control the masses. ✨ About me: I’m Catharina Doria, an AI ethicist and one of the 100 Most Brilliant Women in AI EthicsTM. For reference, here is the AI-generated Coca-Cola ad…

… and a flashcard highlighting, in this outcome at least, its shortcomings (via LinkedIn)…

… which has been unfavourably compared to the Apple ident – and even to Coca-Cola’s own vintage CGI ads:

Apple is no stranger to practical effects and handmade visuals in their advertising – just ask FKA Twigs and director Spike Jonze:

Try It Yourself

This is perhaps only tangentially related (a slider was involved in the production of those Apple idents), but Herman Huang is such a good presenter and educator (with increasing levels of complexity – swoon), and the video production of his lessons is fantastic, so he’ll likely get an entry all his own… but for now, here he is demonstrating simple but striking techniques with a slider and editing:
