A run-through of cinematic lighting techniques with limited resources.
Potato Jet, together with gaffer Eric Fickenwirth, run through a range of lighting setups (as well as terms which are helpful to know) that can be achieved with a single light and some commonly used accessories:
A few takeaways:
- how to use a C-stand correctly – as Eric demonstrates, the weight should be falling in the same direction that the grip head tightens
- bounce card – reflect or “bounce” light from a light source, to “fill in” shadows cast by that source
- negative fill – the opposite of the previous point, where shadow cast is increased for a more dramatic or mysterious look:
